Jamie Roberts says Wales are the worst they've ever been in the professional era as they equalled their longest losing run at Test level with defeat to Fiji on Sunday.

The 24-19 loss in Cardiff was Wales' 10th consecutive defeat in Test rugby, with their last victory in international rugby now being over 400 days ago.

Warren Gatland's side now face the prospect of a first winless calendar year since 1937, although the head coach claimed afterwards that there were "lots of good things" that they can build on, adding it would "take time" with the young group of players.

However, former Wales centre and current Welsh Rugby Union board member Roberts, working as a TV pundit on the Welsh language coverage of the game, disagreed with his former coach, saying that Gatland was understandably trying to put a "spin" on the situation.

"He says they are growing as a group," he said during S4C's coverage of the defeat to Fiji. “I have to disagree to be honest.

“Losing 10 on the bounce - that's the worst Wales have been in the professional era.

"I understand the spin Warren is trying to give but sorry, I don't think Wales have moved forward.

"Maybe some elements of their game , but you can't see Wales growing. I watched Australia yesterday as a team that has grown and taken a step forward as a team.

"You can see a team that has grown from the summer to be honest."

Roberts joined the WRU Board as an independent Non-Executive Director in October 2023.

During his playing career, Roberts played 94 times for Wales, touring twice with the Lions under Gatland, as well as winning two Grand Slams and three Six Nations Championships with Wales alongside Gatland.
