Former Stoke City captain John Eustace will face his old club on Wednesday night determined to avoid further “disappointments”.

Eustace is now manager of Blackburn Rovers, who will host the Potters in a 7.45pm midweek kick-off at Ewood Park.

And having seen Rovers lose 2-0 to Sheffield United on Saturday, Eustace is keen to get his side’s play-off push back on track at the expense of his old club.

Former Stoke striker Tyrese Campbell was on target against Rovers, just as he was against the Potters the week before in another 2-0 success for the high-flying Blades. Harrison Burrows grabbed their opening goal.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, Eustace told the Lancashire Telegraph: “I think it's important we get a result. I don't think the performance [against Sheffield United] was anything to worry about, but we have to learn from it.

“When we get disappointments - we go a goal down, two goals down - we must learn to carry on doing what we do, which is being competitive.

“I think the performance was good up until they scored their second goal. I don't think there's an issue getting the ball into the final third, but the final pass was the problem. That last half an hour was a bit disappointing, but it's something we will learn from.”

In fact, Rovers ended the game without a shot on target and have now failed to register a goal in their last three outings. They have now slipped to eighth in the Championship and are two points outside the play-off places.

However, Rovers have only lost once on their own patch so far this season and will pose a tough challenge for a Stoke side who were far from convincing in beating Derby County 2-1 at the weekend.

The victory was only the second of Narcis Pelach’s nine games as head coach and the Potters first in four games after a series of draws were punctuated by that defeat at Bramall Lane.

In early injury news ahead of the game, Eustace confirmed that winger Arnor Sigurdsson will be out until after the international break with a slight strain.

Rovers’ Brighton loan man Amario Cozier-Duberry has already been ruled out through injury, while midfielder Lewis Baker is also unavailable given that he is on loan from the Potters. Defensive duo of Scott Wharton and Hayden Carter are long-term absentees.

Discussing Baker's impact at Ewood Park, Eustace told the Rovers' club website: “It’s a shame for Bakes [Baker] because he’d have loved to have got on the pitch against them.

“I think Bakes has been a real great member of the squad since he’s come in and he’s helped all the lads. He’s a very good footballer and a positive boy.

“I’m sure over the next 10 or 15 games that we’ll see some real quality from Bakes that we’re all looking forward to.”
