John Higgins commits 'unbelievable' foul as home hero leaves opponent in shock during Scottish Open snooker exit
Scots snooker star John Higgins suffered an 'unbelievable' bit of bad luck, as he exited the Scottish Open against Barry Hawkins.
The Wizard of Wishaw - who faces Ronnie O'Sullivan at next month's Masters - had fought back from 3-2 down to draw level and set up a final-frame decider in the best of seven clash at Edinburgh's Meadowbank, only to leave UK Championship finalist Hawkins a golden chance for victory in bizarre fashion - that left Eurosport commentator Neal Foulds shocked. As Higgins attempted to escape a snooker, the 49-year-old somehow went round the back of three reds that were in a cluster near the bottom-left corner.
Shocked commentator Foulds said: "I can’t believe what I’ve seen. He’s gone round the back of all of those reds. How on earth do you miss all those reds there? This is unbelievable. You think he’s going to hit a red for sure – I can’t believe he’s missed them all. That is unreal." The foul gifted Hawkins four points at the start of the deciding frame, and the Englishman went on to produce a superb break of 87 to secure victory and book his spot in the last 16.

Speaking after the match as he saw the decisive moment back for the first time, Hawkins was left in disbelief - muttering 'oh my god' as he watched alongside Eurosport analyst Alan McManus. The world Number 12 commented: "John said at the end 'I think I brought you down' but no chance. It was a struggle at the start and I felt like I started cueing the ball a bit better towards the end, but it was a bit of a strange one really.
"That's so unlucky isn't it. How close has he got to both the reds? He couldn't do that if he tried could he?"
Home hopes in Edinburgh now lie with Stephen Maguire, after he got revenge on World Champion Kyren Wilson for a 6-0 whitewash at the UK Championship by fighting back from 2-1 down to win the match 4-2. Maguire won a tight opener thanks to a match-winning 79 break, but favourite Wilson then looked to be on course for victory as he edged 2-1 ahead. An inspired Maguire, however, took control as he reeled off the next three frames to win the match and set up a clash with China's Guodong Xiao.
