Aston Villa's winless run in all competitions extended to six matches as Unai Emery's side were held to a 2-2 draw by Crystal Palace at Villa Park.

After Ollie Watkins equalised for Villa after Ismaila Sarr’s opener, Youri Tielemans missed a penalty in the 45th minute, moments before Justin Devenny went down the other end and restored the Eagles' advantage before the break. Ross Barkley levelled the game up again with 15 minutes to play, but Villa couldn't find a late goal to claim what would have been their first win in a month.

Villa were sluggish in the first half and paid an early price for their slow start as Sarr ran onto Jean-Philippe Mateta's through ball and converted past Emi Martinez. They responded in the 28th minute through Watkins, who picked up John McGinn’s pass before rounding Dean Henderson and rolling the ball into the empty net.

Leon Bailey came close to turning the game around three minutes after Watkins’ leveller when his effort from inside the box struck the bar. The winger was then fouled inside the box shortly after, but it took a VAR check for referee Tim Robinson to award the spot-kick.

Tielemans stepped up, but saw his effort saved by Henderson. Just minutes later, Villa found themselves behind once again as Devenny scored at the Holte End.

The hosts started the second half on the front foot and nearly equalised through McGinn, but he couldn't quite steer the ball in from close range after Bailey played it across the box. It took until the 77th minute for Villa to level the game up as Barkley headed in the equaliser from Tielemans' corner.

Martinez made a top save to prevent Villa falling behind again when he tipped Jeffrey Schlupp's strike onto the post.

Player ratings

Emi Martinez

There was very little Martinez could do to prevent either of Palace's goals, especially the second as Sarr rolled the ball across the box for Devenny to score. He made an outstanding save to deny Schlupp just after Barkley's equaliser. 7

Lamare Bogarde

Bogarde made his first league appearance since the 3-2 win over Everton back in September. He lacked care with his passing at times, but battled well against Tyrick Mitchell. He was replaced at half-time for the returning Matty Cash. 5

Diego Carlos

Carlos let Mateta wander in the middle of the pitch to collect the ball and play Sarr through on goal. He was booked for fouling Mateta on the hour mark. Villa lack leadership at the back when Ezri Konsa isn't on the pitch. 5

Pau Torres

Torres gambled on playing Sarr offside before the Palace forward beat Maatsen to the ball and beat Martinez. He tried his best to help sustain pressure in the Palace half, but the game was too frantic. 5

Ian Maatsen

Maatsen made his first league start of the campaign. It was a strong performance from the left-back, who defended well and caused problems for Palace in the final third. 6

Ross Barkley

Barkley came straight into the starting XI after overcoming injury in the international break having been absent in all four of Villa's defeats before the break. He was comfortable on the ball and linked play well as Villa looked to build some momentum in the second half. He's now scored in successive appearances after heading in Villa's equaliser. 8*

Youri Tielemans

Tielemans missed the penalty which would have put Villa in the lead going into half-time. It was the Belgian's delivery from a corner which Barkley headed in to equalise. 6

Leon Bailey

Bailey showed a few flashes of quality today even though he is lacking confidence at the minute. He pinged a brilliant into Watkins' stride before the forward's effort was saved by Henderson in the first half. He then rattled the bar late in the first half before also making a big chance at the start of the second half. 6

John McGinn

Fresh from scoring in each of Scotland's Nations League matches, McGinn played one of his better games of the season for Villa today. After assisting Watkins in the first half, he came mightily close to putting Villa in the lead early in the second half, but he couldn't get enough contact on the ball to turn Bailey's cross over the line. 6

Morgan Rogers

It was a quiet afternoon for Rogers, who struggled to make much of an impact. He was taken off for Emi Buendia late on. 5

Ollie Watkins

Watkins' first sight of goal came in the 28th minute when he fired at the near post from inside the box. He took his goal well and was a threat throughout the match. 6

SUBS

Matty Cash (for Bogarde, 45'): The right-back returned to action after picking up an injury earlier this month against Tottenham. 6

Lucas Digne (for Maatsen, 69'): It was a surprise not to see Digne play from the off considering his form. 6

Jhon Duran (for McGinn, 69'): The young striker came on a little later than usual and considering Villa were losing, perhaps his introduction should have come 10 minutes before. He put himself about and added unpredictability in the final third. 6

Jaden Philogene (for Bailey, 82'): N/A

Emi Buendia (for Rogers, 82': N/A

Subs not used: Olsen, Mings, Nedeljkovic, Broggio.

GOALS

Aston Villa: Watkins (36'), Barkley (77')

Crystal Palace: Sarr (4'), Devenny (45+1')
