Jonathan Kuminga sought a deal well beyond $30 million per season

.
.

No one else on the current roster has a contract that exceeds $30 million in 2025-26, and Kuminga and his representatives, according to sources, sought a deal well beyond that amount. A deal that would have had considerably more impact on the payroll than those lined up for four-time All-Star Draymond Green and 2022 All-Star Andrew Wiggins.

More on this storyline

There was, according to two NBA sources, enough uncertainty to prevent Golden State from handing Kuminga the kind of massive contract extension that would have signified he is next in line to hold the keys to the franchise. With the deadline passing at 3 p.m. PT Monday, the 22-year-old forward will become a restricted free agent next summer. “He took a leap last season,” one source said. “They want to see another one before they make that investment. He’s still under their control. If Kuminga has a strong season, I know they’ll take care of him.” -via NBC Sports Bay Area / October 22, 2024

The Golden State Warriors and forward Jonathan Kuminga will not reach a new deal before Monday's 6 p.m. ET deadline for rookie contract extensions, sources told ESPN. The Warriors and Kuminga's representative, Aaron Turner of Verus Basketball, have been in discussions over the last several months but never gained traction in talks. -via ESPN / October 21, 2024

Kuminga believes in his talent and ability to progress into a star in the league and the Warriors have seen statistics that measure his growth similarly to the early years of the Clippers' Kawhi Leonard, Indiana's Pascal Siakam and Boston's Jaylen Brown. The Warriors, however, prefer to view Kuminga's growth this upcoming season. The fit between Kuminga and head coach Steve Kerr is also something Warriors officials are monitoring, sources said. -via ESPN / October 21, 2024
