Jordan Henderson provides definitive response to Sunderland transfer talk
JORDAN HENDERSON has played down talk of a potential return to Sunderland during the January transfer window.
Henderson has been struggling for game time with Dutch side Ajax in the first half of the season, leading to suggestions that he could be willing to consider an emotional return to Wearside next month.
The 34-year-old started his career with Sunderland, making 79 senior appearances for his hometown club before leaving for Liverpool, where he established himself as an England regular and won both the Champions League and Premier League.
A brief spell in Saudi Arabia did not go to plan, and Henderson has also found himself in and out of the starting line-up since joining Ajax almost 12 months ago.
The Sunderland hierarchy are understood to be willing to consider the possibility of a move for the former England international, but addressing the transfer talk directly for the first time at the weekend, Henderson recommitted himself to Ajax and brushed off suggestions that a return to the Stadium of Light could be imminent.
“It’s (Sunderland) my club, ever since I was a boy of six or seven years old,” said Henderson. “Then I was in the stands. But I just hope I stay here (at Ajax). I really like it here.

“I want to help the club to grow further. We are also taking those steps. But I also read it (the transfer speculation). I don’t even know where all this comes from, because there has been no contact.”
Sunderland skipper Dan Neil was asked about the possibility of Henderson re-signing earlier this season, and spoke positively about the prospect of playing alongside one of his idols.
“Would I like to play alongside Jordan for Sunderland? Of course, yeah,” said Neil. “He’s a top-quality player, so whenever you get the chance to play with top-quality players, you embrace it. Yeah, he can come back if he wants.”
