Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that Son Heung-min could be playing for England's 'best clubs' instead of plying his trade in north London.

Son arrived at Spurs in 2015 and almost instantly became a fan favourite. To date, the 31-year-old has made 405 appearances for Tottenham, in which time he has scored 162 goals and grabbed 83 assists.

In the summer, Son was promoted to captain after Harry Kane departed for Bayern Munich, and the added responsibility has not negatively impacted his performances at all. He has bagged 17 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions under new manager Ange Postecoglou and remains a key player in the Spurs set-up.

However, Mourinho believes the 31-year-old could aspire to even better than he has already accomplished. The Portuguese head coach told EA Sports FC: "I don’t look at Son as a Korean player. I look at Son as one of the best players in the world.

"Maybe Tottenham supporters aren’t going to be happy with what I’m going to say, it’s not disrespectful. He could win titles, he could play for the best teams.

"He could be playing in England for Man City, for Liverpool, for Chelsea. It could be abroad, playing for one of the top teams.

"He has that modern mobility of the attacking players. He can play through the middle, from the sides, wide to coming inside."

Son's current contract is due to expire at the end of next season and at this stage, it is unclear whether a new deal will be agreed upon with Tottenham or not.
