Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has kept his promise to Reds supporters after turning down the vacant USA head coach job.

The 57-year-old is thought to have been the USA's number one target after they sacked Gregg Berhalter following a disastrous Copa America campaign. However, the Athletic report Klopp has rebuffed the advances of the USA, reaffirming is plans to take a sabbatical from football to recharge his batteries following nearly nine years on Merseyside.

With the USA, alongside Canada and Mexico, set to host the 2026 World Cup in just two years, the news of Klopp's rejection will likely come as a bitter blow to US officials.

And in turning down the USA job, Klopp has stood by the words he gave to Liverpool fans when he initially announced he would be leaving last season.

Earlier this year, Klopp told the media he would never manage a different club in England other than Liverpool. He also added he would not be managing another club or a country "at least for a year."

"If you ask me, ‘Will you ever work as a manager again?’ I would say now, no," Klopp said in January. "But I don’t know obviously how that will feel because I never had the situation.

He continued: "What I know definitely — I will never, ever manage a different club in England than Liverpool, 100 per cent. That’s not possible. My love for this club, my respect for the people is too big. I couldn’t. I couldn’t for a second think about it. There’s no chance.

"This is part of my life, we are part of the family, we feel home here. There’s no chance to do that. But all the rest, will I ever work again? Of course, I know myself, I cannot just sit around. I will find something else maybe to do. But I will not manage a club or a country at least for a year, that’s not possible, I cannot do that and I don’t want to. That’s all."
