Douglas Luiz appears to be losing his battle for an Aston Villa reunion in the Champions League.

Villa and Juventus clash at Villa Park on Wednesday (8pm kick-off) in the revamped opening stage of the elite competition, but it increasingly seems unlikely that Luiz will be a part of the game.

The £42m midfielder sold by Villa to Juve in the summer has a muscle problem that has kept him out of action for more than a month. It meant he was omitted from the Bianconeri side that drew 0-0 at AC Milan on Saturday - and now seems likely to miss the midweek trip to Villa too.

Juve boss Thiago Motta was playing a cagey game over the Brazilian’s situation as he revealed an injury list ahead of the Milan clash that contained seven players. He said: “We have lost Juan Cabal. He and Gleison Bremer will take longer to recover. The others will return to action earlier.”

Luiz has already been the subject of speculation linking him with a move away from Turin in January after reportedly failing to settle in Italy - with Villa credited with an interest.

However, Juventus great Massimo Bonini believes Luiz should be kept by his former club and given time to prove himself.

Speaking to Tuttosport, the man who played with Michel Platini as Juve won Serie A and the European Cup declared: “I go against the grain. I like him, I think he’s an important player. We have to wait for Douglas because he has great quality.
