Former Wales rugby captain Ken Owens made a surprise cameo appearance on Saturday night's Strictly Come Dancing.

The ex-Scarlets hooker was in the audience to cheer on opera singer, presenter and fellow Welshman Wynne Evans, who had taken to the dancefloor to perform a rumba to Dame Shirley Bassey's 'This is My Life'.

Ahead of his 'Icons Week' performance, Evans had taken his dance partner Katya Jones to the Principality Stadium to show her a glimpse of what it means to be Welsh, with Dame Shirley having performed on the pitch several times over the course of her career.

But there was to be another feature for Welsh rugby before Evans' turn was done as, following a big finish to his routine, the camera cut to the applauding audience with Owens front and centre.

Owens' appearance took some viewers at home by surprise, as one wrote: "Ken the Sheriff on Strictly, flying the flag - great support for our fantastic @wynneevans." Another added: "Ken Owens is on Strictly!".

Welsh Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi was one of those delighted to see Owens make an appearance, as she wrote: "Day made, Ken Owens and the lovely Carys in the audience of Strictly."

Meanwhile, others couldn't resist teasing that the ⁦91-cap international would be back in the studio as a contestant for next year's series, with one fan writing: "Ken⁩ having a cheeky reccie of the Strictly studios before competing next year!"

The 37-year-old retired from rugby earlier this year, having played 274 matches for the Scarlets and represented Wales and the British & Irish Lions on the international stage. He captained Wales during the 2023 Six Nations before a back problem sidelined him for almost a year and ultimately forced him to hang up his boots.
