Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui, Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands win 2024 NYC Marathon

The 2024 New York City Marathon has crowned its winners: Kenyan runner Sheila Chepkirui took home the women's competition, while Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands won the men's side.

In the women's race, the field was eventually whittled down to Chepkirui and Hellen Obiri, with the two Kenyan women battling it out in the final mile. But Chepkirui outran Obiri in the final stretch, defeating the defending champion with a time of 2:24:35.

The men's pack slowly thinned out in the final miles, eventually leaving only Nageeye and Kenyan Evans Chebet with less than two miles remaining. In the final sprint, Nageeye — who won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics — pushed ahead of Chebet, finishing first with a time of 2:07:39.

The top American runners in the two divisions — Sara Vaughn and Conner Mantz — both came in sixth place.

Earlier in the morning, Americans Daniel Romanchuk and Susannah Scaroni were victorious in the wheelchair division. Romanchuk, now a three-time winner, finished the race in 1:36:31, while Scaroni cruised to a time of 1:48:05 to take her second win.

Runners kicked off the five-borough race on Staten Island, crossing the Verzzano-Narrows Bridge to go through Brooklyn and Queens; the racers then moved into Manhattan, crossing into the Bronx for a mile or so and then finishing the race in Central Park.
