Kieran Tierney given Arsenal lifeline as Mikel Arteta hands Scotland star Champions League shot
Kieran Tierney looks to have got himself back into the first team picture at Arsenal after the Scotland defender was included in the Gunners' squad for their Champions League clash with Sporting CP on Tuesday night.
The former Celtic star has yet to kick a ball this season after limping off with a hamstring injury in Scotland's 1-1 draw with Switzerland at the Euros in June but has returned to training in recent weeks. Tierney - who spent the whole of last season on loan at Real Sociedad - hasn't appeared for Mikel Arteta's side since the meeting with Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley in August 2023 -had seen his chances of getting back into the Spaniard's plans dashed with the arrival of left-sided defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna and the return to fitness of Jurrien Timber.
But the 27-year-old - who was linked with a move away from North London in the summer - could be in line for a long-awaited comeback after being named in Arsenal's travelling party for the trip to Lisbon. The Gunners suffered a 1-0 loss to Inter Milan on matchday four of the revamped competition and know that three points against the Portuguese league champions are essential if they want to claim one of the top eight positions that ensure automatic progress to the knockout rounds.
