'They kill you' - Why Jurgen Klopp refused to bring on Jayden Danns for Liverpool against Everton

Jurgen Klopp has explained why he didn’t make any changes to his attack during Liverpool’s disappointing Merseyside derby defeat to Everton.

Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez were both recalled to the starting XI against the Blues but missed a number of opportunities as the pair’s recent lack of form continued. Luis Diaz, meanwhile, had the Reds’ best chance, only to be denied by the woodwork.

Liverpool were left without both Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo against Everton, with the Portuguese sidelined with a minor injury while the Dutchman sat out the trip to Goodison Park after his partner went into labour. Their absence meant 18-year-old Jayden Danns was handed a place on the bench.

But Klopp, who refused to use fatigue or his side’s injury woes this season as an excuse, conceded it was not the right game to introduce the teenager in, even though the Reds were struggling in front of goal.

“Players who played all the games aren’t fresh but for other teams it is the same,” the Liverpool boss said. “I don’t want to use that really as an excuse.

“As long as the boys are fit, like not injured, that helps. Gabriel and Saliba I think played all the games for Arsenal. Did they play a little bit less than us? I don’t even know, but they played a lot of games as well. But coming back from injury is then slightly different because intensity, the game is not waiting for you.

“Upfront where it is a super intense job to do. Always high sprint, always go, go, go. The fact we can’t change there is difficult.

“I know we had Dannsy on the bench. I know that but in that physical game I didn’t want to. We didn’t know that we had to bring him in because the two situations.

“With Diogo, we only learned two days ago and Cody actually really only today. That’s not a game for an 18-year-old boy. Tarkowski and Branthwaite kill you in these situations and doesn’t help.

“A lot of things come together. It’s not great timing and I admit that. I would prefer to be sitting here winning 4-0 and flying and can’t wait for the next game.

“The job is to win football games and the more you win, the more successful you are and in the moment we didn’t win enough to get anything out of the season yet. We should better start winning again.”
