Kris Boyd was in no laughing mood as he blasted the decision not to send off Celtic's Reo Hatate at Rugby Park.

The ex-Rangers and Kilmarnock striker was on Sky Sports punditry duties as he watched the Hoops overcome dogged Killie 2-0 in Ayrshire. But he wasn't happy when pouring over one of the game's major talking points which saw midfielder Hatate escape a red card for a late tackle on Liam Donnelly.

The Japanese playmaker was booked by ref Nick Walsh after catching Donnelly on the knee with his studs late in the second-half. VAR Don Robertson examined the incident but eventually decided there was no need for Walsh to take further action. Killie boss Derek McInnes admitted post-match that he felt the yellow card was justifiable, saying: "When it goes to VAR, I’m sure the pictures didn’t look good, but in terms of force, I’m not sure it was a red card, to be honest."

However, that view wasn't shared in the studio as fizzing Boyd accused officials Walsh and Robertson of making a huge mistake. He raged: "It’s a red card. It’s a red card. It’s a red card. All day long.

"You can’t catch a player that far up a leg and turn round and say sorry and hope to get away with it. He catches him below the knee. Just below the knee. It’s impossible not to get sent off there. So the referee gets it wrong on the pitch and Don Robertson gets it wrong in the VAR room. That’s a red card all day long."

Fellow pundit James McFadden initially joked that he felt the correct outcome was reached but changed his tune following Boyd's animated rant. He said: "I don't know because you need to go with endangering an opponent, which he is. It's high, it's outstretched.

"The excessive force or brutality is not there in terms of, he's not going in with a huge amount of force. I know he pulls out, but his leg is extended, it's high and his studs are showing. A lot of people will say that the game has gone soft, that would still have been a red card. I think he's very fortunate."

While McFadden and host Eilidh Barbour attempted to add some humour to the analysis, Boyd wasn't having it as he added: "I know we're laughing and joking about it but see if that's against Celtic, they would have been going off their head tonight. There will be nothing said tonight. That's a red card all day long."
