Lack of quality in final third was rare off-day for forwards says Cleverley
With 62% of the possession and 17 attempts on goal, the statistics from the 0-0 draw with QPR show that Watford had enough of the ball and ample sights of the net to have won the game.
However, they drew a blank and also only three of their 17 crosses into the box were accurate.
It felt like there was a lack of composure and good decision-making in the final third.
“We put big demand on our wide players making that extra number in the box and sometimes they weren’t arriving there,” said Tom Cleverley.
“There was some good last-ditch defending from QPR and a little bit of a lack of quality from us today, but it’s something that we can’t aim at our front players for most of the season.
“We’ve scored a lot of goals this season and we will continue to do so.
“It was just today we couldn’t find that final bit.
“The players know what to do in the final third and we have a clear direction, and I try to give them the edge over their opponents in the whole game.
“Today I didn’t feel like we did that and QPR defended our front players well.
“We’ll have to adapt and look at why we weren’t so productive with our box entries today.”
In a tight encounter like that, do Watford lack a sniffer/poacher who can win the game with an instinctive finish?
“I think that’s harsh on Bayo,” said Cleverley.
“He’s scored seven in his last six or seven, so that is extremely harsh on Bayo.”
One player who didn’t even make it onto the bench was striker Danniel Jebbison, who is fit again after a hip injury.
“Like everyone, Jebbo has to fight for his place,” explained the Watford head coach.
“It’s very competitive now, and I think we have 22 fit first-team players and two of those missed out today.
“First of all, Jebbo is competing with Mamadou Doumbia for a place on the bench, and then the pair of them are competing with Bayo for the shirt.
“Today was just a technical decision.”
Having missed out on the chance to pick up six home points, the Hornets now face back-to-back away games.
Only two wins and seven points from 27 on the road shows there is much room for improvement.
“If you go off the process of the last three away performances, the third of them is by far the best,” said Cleverley.
“If we compete and show the same sort of arrogance and will to get on the ball as we did at Plymouth, then that is the performance I am happiest with out of the last three.
“We’ve no worries within the squad about away form, if we perform like we did at Plymouth having been competitive in the last four away games.
“I have no extra pressures on the players and I’m sure we’ll see that next week.”
