Lauren Price hoping to set up ‘great British fight’ with Natasha Jonas in 2025
LAUREN Price is eyeing a potential unification bout with Natasha Jonas in 2025 ahead of the pair’s respective title fights in Liverpool this weekend.
IBF welterweight champion Jonas, fighting in her home city, puts her belt on the line against WBC holder Ivana Habazin, while Price faces Bexcy Mateus on the same card at the Exhibition Centre on Saturday.
Price is making the first defence of her WBA welterweight title and the 30-year-old is looking to make it eight wins from eight as a professional, with the possibility of facing veteran Jonas next year an enticing one for the Ystrad Mynach fighter.
“That’s a silly question, of course I want it,” said Price when asked about a meeting with Jonas.
“I got respect for Natasha, it’s a great British fight. We both have a job to do on Saturday and I believe we do that and do it in style.
“2025 is a big year, I want to create greatness, legacy and follow in footsteps of Joe Calzaghe for Wales and it’s a massive fight for women’s boxing and boxing in general.”
Jonas’ bout against Habazin is the 40-year-old’s sixth successive world title fight.
She revealed a showdown with Price is in the pipeline if all goes to plan this weekend.
“It’s a fight that I’ve signed an extension for. It’s a fight that’s definitely on the cards if we both come through,” Jonas said.
“But I’m not trying to look past the one that’s in front of me. I’ve just got to do my part, which is beat Habazin, so that’s what I’m focussed on,”
A victory for Jonas in front of her home crowd will extend her winning streak to seven fights and improve her overall record to 16 wins from 19 contests.
“I think from the amateurs up all you want is these big nights and I’m privileged to be in my home city doing that,” she said.
“I’m focussed on the result and I didn’t see the progression or journey until I’ve finished and looked back, it’s been some journey and it will be some book and movie one day.”
