Lawrence Shankland reveals Hearts goal targets surpassed as striker 'couldn't have dreamed' of Premiership POTY award

Lawrence Shankland has admitted he "couldn't have dreamed" of winning Player of the Year as Hearts' first ever recipient of the award.

The Jambos hitman also revealed how he has already surpassed his personal goals tally as he hopes he's saved some for Euro 2024 with Scotland this summer. Shankland has smashed in an incredible 29 goals in all competitions this term and that set him up to be voted by his peers as the best in the country.

And after winning the same award for Ayr United in their League One season a number of years ago, the 29-year-old has explained how he never expected to win the same trophy in the top tier.

"I'm delighted," he said. "Obviously it's a trophy not many players outside the Old Firm win, you just have to look at that roll of honour to see the list you're joining. Some real football legends in there so I'm delighted and it's a really proud moment.

"It's good (to have the recognition), obviously to get nominated first and foremost was good but it shows you've made an impact and an impression on other teams in the league and not just your own and that's always nice to hear.

"It was five or six years ago and I was just delighted to pick that up (League One POTY), but I probably couldn't have dreamed that I'd get Premiership Player of the Year. But here we are and like I said, I'm really proud of it.

"Is this my best season yet? Aye, coming on from last season, obviously my first season at Hearts was really good and I wanted to try and better that. These awards add to that and it'll feel a better season. My target of goals I've beat it as well so it's been good and it's nice to come to the end of the season and pick this up."

Shankland hopes to be part of Steve Clarke's Euro squad for Germany and he's also praying he's got a few strikes left in the locker.

"I hope so! They've dried up of late, I've not had as many so I'll hopefully keep some in the bank. But nah, we can hopefully finish the season strong and go and look forward to that."
