Ruud van Nistelrooy now waits to find out what the future holds for him at Manchester United under incoming head coach Ruben Amorim.

With the new man arriving on Monday, the positions of several staff members who worked under former manager Erik ten Hag are in doubt, with Van Nistelrooy being the most notable. He has sounded open to staying at the club despite the change and seeing out his contract at Old Trafford, which runs until the end of next season.

However, this will ultimately not be his decision. Here is how the national media have responded to the speculation surrounding Van Nistelrooy's future at United.

Whether it is a bigger farewell remains to be seen. Van Nistelrooy expects to hear on Monday if there is a role for him on Amorim's backroom staff. "The future is open," he said, but he has at least enhanced his own reputation, providing a sure hand on the tiller.

It's hard to see where the Dutchman fits into the new set-up if Amorim does indeed bring five of his back-room staff from Sporting Lisbon, but it would be nice to think there is a place for him. After all, United have hardly been spoilt for success over the last decade. A man who knows a thing or two about the club and put together this run of results must be worth keeping around.

Credit must go to Van Nistelrooy for re-energising this United set-up. There was certainly more attacking vibrancy during his spell in charge, a spell - judging by the emotional scenes at the final whistle - that he clearly loved.

Whether or not Van Nistelrooy stays on the staff remains to be seen. But even if Amorim does decide it is not a workable set-up, the new manager owes the Dutchman gratitude for at least one deed. Van Nistelrooy has shown that a player such as Amad represents the route back to the top for Manchester United.

Ruud van Nistelrooy signed off in style after finishing his caretaker shift with Manchester United on a high. Van Nistelrooy will hand over the reins to Ruben Amorim this week, and wait to find out if he still has a role at Old Trafford.

But he will leave behind a team unbeaten in his four games in charge, and with some momentum and goals behind them at last. And while Van Nistelrooy has improved United's results since replacing Erik ten Hag last month, there is still a huge job waiting for Amorim.
