Leeds United set to lose key transfer piece ahead of January window with no replacement planned
A key cog in Leeds United’s transfer strategy is set to leave the club. Technical director Gretar Steinsson is already transitioning to a new role with United’s ownership group, 49ers Enterprises.
As first reported by The Athletic, Steinsson will continue as a technical director, but with a focus on industry trend research, technology and player advancements for the San Francisco organisation. It’s an appointment which opens the door to a multi-club model for the 49ers group, though that idea is yet to gather any meaningful momentum.
Crucially, there are currently no plans at Elland Road for Steinsson to be replaced, LeedsLive understands. The former Tottenham Hotspur chief has been heading up player identification for the Whites, closely assisted by head of recruitment Jordan Miles.

Alongside Steinsson, interim football advisor Nick Hammond has worked on the deals to move players in and out of the club across the past three windows. Manager Daniel Farke has collaborated closely with them on deals, under the overall stewardship of chief executive Angus Kinnear.
As it stands, the current leadership structure will be left as it is after Steinsson’s exit. Under Kinnear, Leeds have Hammond continuing in a consultancy role, Farke, Adam Underwood (head of football operations) and Hannah Cox (head of football administration).
While Steinsson’s remit will expand to all prospective clubs under the 49ers banner, his work will continue to benefit Leeds. The Icelander was one of several appointments made by Paraag Marathe last year after the takeover from Andrea Radrizzani.
Victor Orta’s reign ended before relegation was confirmed in 2023. Hammond then arrived in June, aided the search for a new manager, before Farke signed in July. On the commercial side of the club, Morrie Eisenberg was hired as chief operating officer and Robbie Evans as chief strategy officer.
