Leeds United undroppable has proven Daniel Farke right as big transfer question fades
There was little hype or fanfare after Leeds United signed Joe Rothwell on a season-long loan deal from Bournemouth in the summer transfer window. Rothwell was their third summer recruit following the permanent captures of Joe Rodon and Alex Cairns.
Rothwell spent last season at Southampton but struggled to make an impact as the Saints defeated the Whites in the Championship play-off final at Wembley to seal promotion back to the Premier League. A central midfielder with an eye for goal, Rothwell arrived in West Yorkshire with a big point to prove.
But followers of a United persuasion expected Rothwell to warm the substitutes bench most weeks and provide adequate back up to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev in the middle of the park. Few anticipated that Rothwell would be a first team regular.

Yet Rothwell's experience, confidence and class on the ball swiftly came to the fore after injuries in quick succession to Ampadu and Gruev between September and October left Daniel Farke with a big gaping hole to fill in central midfield. It is no coincidence that United have lost just of their past 13 matches since Rothwell linked up together with Ao Tanaka in the centre. Both have sacrificed some of their attacking instincts and been asked to play deeper to give United's back four extra protection.
Tanaka has arguably been the best signing in the Championship this season, but Rothwell has also played a key role in their fine run of form. He has looked the part in and out of possession, completely justifying the Whites' decision to bring in him.
Another part of Rothwell's game that should not be underestimated is his delivery from dead ball situations. Joe Rodon profited from Rothwell's pinpoint corner to bag the opener in Saturday's routine win at home to Derby County. It has taken a while to get to this point, but United are finally starting to trouble the opposition more attacking set plays.
With Ampadu fit-again and Gruev expected to return to action in the New Year, Farke faces a tricky selection dilemma. Not everyone can play. At least one member of Farke's experienced midfield is going to miss out on his starting XI, even if he pushes Rothwell or Tanaka into the No 10 position.
They say these are good problems for managers to have, but it would be harsh on Rothwell if he came out of the team to accommodate Ampadu or Gruev. Rothwell has the shirt right now and deserves to keep his place.
