Liam Donnelly 'lucky' to escape Celtic red card as reason VAR didn't pick up on forgotten Kilmarnock flashpoint named
Kilmarnock star Liam Donnelly has been told he was "lucky" to avoid a red card after a clash with Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Derek McInnes' side were desperately searching for a route back into the game at Rugby Park with Brendan Rodgers' side leading 2-0 at the time of the incident - as the Northern Ireland international rushed to close down the Hoops' No. 1. However after the ball was played by the Dane to Auston Trusty, Donnelly flew into the challenge and appeared to narrowly miss elbowing the shot-stopper.
Schmeichel responded angrily to the challenge with teammate Trusty also rushing in to confront the Killie star. Referee Nick Walsh would dish out a yellow card to Donnelly with Don Robertson in the VAR room backing up the decision by the man in the middle. Asked if there had been an elbow from Donnelly, Billy Dodds told BBC Sportscene: “There was. You can see once he has kicked it (the ball) away.
"If he connects, he will be off the pitch as well. Lucky. Schmeichel isn’t happy and Trusty is straight over - you can see why. The swipe of the arm - if that connects, it’s a knockout.”
Lee Miller believed that the elbow followed on from Reo Hatate’s lunge on the midfielder seconds before - which saw the Celtic man also swerve a red card following a VAR check: “He’s a goner (if that connects) and Derek McInnes would have been fuming with him having been sent off a few weeks back. It probably leads on from the challenge that has just been made on him from Hatate. He has been frustrated and wants to lay down a marker but he’s lucky to avoid a red card, he doesn’t make full connection.”
