Hull City's influential winger Liam Millar will undergo surgery on his right knee later today as he begins his long road to recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL).

Millar has been at the training ground in recent days while he watched City's 2-1 home defeat to West Brom on Sunday. He was in good spirits ahead of going under the knife, feeling he’s in a good place ahead of his long road to recovery.

The summer signing, who started the season well following his big-money move from FC Basel, picked up the injury after just five minutes of the 1-1 draw with Burnley late last month.

Despite trying to carry on after a spell of treatment, Millar had to leave the pitch early in what was a major blow to City, losing one of their key players for the remainder of the season and beyond. That news was only added to with the injury picked up by Mohamed Belloumi at Oxford United a week ago, which will see him sidelined with the same injury and the pair, at least recovering together during what is a traditionally lonely period.

Boss Tim Walter says City will do everything they can to support the Canadian international's recovery, with the German even joking that he can join him on the bench.

"I wish him all the best. He's so positive, and that's what I like very, very much; in Liam's case, now he is so open," Walter told Hull Live. "He's tried to do every other thing, maybe to get to know more from the gaffer's side of things.

"It's good to have him; maybe a bit unlucky for him at this moment because of his injury, but he takes his time to get more positive with more different views, and I will help him in this case. I wish him all the best for the surgery, and we're looking forward to having him back."

On Millar's keen interest in the coaching side of things, Walter joked that "he can be my assistant" when he gets back on his feet after his operation.
