Cody Gakpo paid tribute to the Liverpool supporters inside Anfield after the Reds overcame Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 in an impressive Champions League victory for Arne Slot's side.

The Dutchman struck in a second half blitz as Luis Diaz scored a hat-trick to see off Xabi Alonso's Bundesliga winners. Liverpool moved top of the new 36-team Champions League standings, ahead of Aston Villa.

And Anfield could still be heard loud and clear as Liverpool fans chanted the name of former Reds midfielder Alonso after the final whistle, so much so that the Amazon interviewer asked Gakpo what he made of the din inside the ground as it celebrated another impressive victory.

Midway through the post-match interview, he said: "What part did the crowd play? Listen to them now. It's special on European nights, but they help pull you through don't they?"

Gakpo responded: "Yeah, like they did last weekend (against Brighton) as well. What part do they play? They play a very big part. Every game they are there for us and we try to show them what we've got to make them proud."

Gakpo admitted that Diaz's chipped opener, created by a quite brilliant throughball by Curtis Jones, changed the game for Liverpool and allowed them to run riot in the second half.

He said: "A good result against a very good team. They play a very good game, very top opponent but we kept trying, creating chances, defending well and in the end the goal came and that won us the game, the first goal.

"Fantastic pass by Curtis and amazing finish by Lucho, and as I said it was very important to open the game. And after that it was a little bit more easy to score the second, the third and the fourth goal."
