Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has been handed his international debut by interim England boss Lee Carsley.

The Reds star has impressed in recent weeks under Arne Slot and has been rewarded with a senior debut against Greece by Carsley, who managed Jones during their time together with the England U21's. Jones looks set to start alongside Atletico Madrid's Conor Gallagher in a midfield pivot, with Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham operating ahead of the pair.

Carsley has opted to start Jordan Pickford in net. In front of the Everton shot stopper, Carsley has also named a back four of Kyle Walker, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi and Rico Lewis.

On the wings, Carsley has selected Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon on the left, with Chelsea ace Noni Madueke operating on the right. And in attack, Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins starts ahead of England skipper Harry Kane, who is on the bench.

Liverpool star Jones had been in line to make his senior debut last month during England's Nations League fixtures against Greece and Finland, but ended up withdrawing from Carsley's squad due to the birth of his first child.

Speaking following his November call-up, Jones explained how working under Slot has helped him kick-on and improve his game. Jones said: "I feel that I'm at the point now where I'm enjoying it the most that I have. I say that in terms of style of play that suits me and the love that I'm getting from the coaches and the staff all around.

"Arne and his staff have come in and the style of play and everything is changing - the the way we go and press and stuff. I think it suits me more. As a fresh start I'll give it everything I can. I’m really enjoying it and the most important thing is that I'm playing with a smile on my face."

He added: "I will approach the game trying to prove to everybody that I'm the player that they say I am - and the player that I've always been since I was a kid. I think this call-up is huge.”

Liverpool.com says: "Jones was deserving of his England call-up for the November fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland and his performances for Liverpool recently have been rewarded by Carsley. If the Liverpool midfielder puts in a good display against Greece, there's every chance he could start against Ireland next week - and potentially give incoming England boss Thomas Tuchel something to think about."
