Liverpool: Arne Slot responds as Pep Guardiola extends contract in Premier League title race
Liverpool boss Arne Slot has explained why Pep Guardiola’s decision to extend his stay at Manchester City is “interesting” for him and the other Premier League managers.
After months of speculation with regards to his future and his previous deal set to expire at the end of the season, the Spaniard has moved to end all doubt by putting pen-to-paper on a two-year extension at the Etihad Stadium.
Should Guardiola stay put all the way through to the summer of 2027 it means he will have spent just over a decade at the club.
With that in mind, if the next two years are anything like the previous eight then it’s going to be very difficult for the likes of Liverpool to dethrone Man City as the dominant force in English football.
Ahead of the return of Premier League football and the showdown next weekend, the Reds are currently five-points clear of the reigning champions at the top of the table. Still, Slot knows the task at hand in order to bring the title back to Anfield whilst Guardiola is still City boss.
Giving his reaction to contract extension, the Dutchman is relishing the chance to pit his wits against a managerial great as he thinks the news is positive for all involved.
"That's good news for City, first of all," Slot said. "And good news for the league because I think everyone wants to have the best managers possible and the best players over here and he's definitely one of the best managers, maybe the best manager in the league.
"If you look at what he did in the last few years, four times champion in a row.
"It's fair to say that he's maybe the best manager in the league.
"That is a good thing, but on the other hand, they have so many quality players that if he made the choice to leave the club I wouldn't have expected them to end up bottom of the league next season.
"Good for the City fans and interesting for us as managers to keep on facing one of the best managers football has ever had."
