Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has dismissed suggestions of refereeing bias in light of David Coote's suspension. The decision was made after a video emerged on social media appearing to show the official launching an expletive-laden rant at Liverpool and former manager Jurgen Klopp.

The footage seems to show the FIFA match referee calling the tactician a "German c**t" as well as labelling the Reds as "s**t". The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) - which governs referees - immediately opened an investigation and within hours, Coote was suspended with immediate effect with an investigation ongoing.

Coote was in charge of Liverpool's, who are understood to be aware of the video, win over Aston Villa on Saturday and in light of his refereeing display, footage on social media surfaced. Reports in the national media have claimed that the Premier League official of eight years is understood to have admitted that the video is genuine.

The Football Association (FA) have also opened a separate investigation into the matter. In light of the storm that the footage has caused, Sky Sports asked Gallagher whether the incident will fuel the belief of some supporters that there is an agenda against clubs, he responded: "I refereed for 46 years, and most of my decisions are based on instinct; you have a knowledge of the laws of the game, the experience that you built up over the years.

"You see an incident and act instinctively, it's like driving a car, you see a red light, you don't think change gear, brake, stop. You just do it. I don't think any referee has any chance to think like that (biased against certain clubs), what I would say is that at the top level, the scrutiny is so intense - it's unbelievable.

"The referees are so exposed to all kinds of things, if a decision isn't right. Every weekend, the key match incidents are looked at by an independent panel of ex-referees - that's how it's scrutinised, every referees performance is reviewed match-by-match-by-match.

"A referee, like David, has refereed on there for nine years, he wouldn't have survived at that level if he wasn't refereeing on a top level if he wasn't making high profile, good decisions."
