Liverpool injury update: Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold latest news and return dates

There has been mixed news for Liverpool as the international break gets underway.

Darwin Nunez has dropped out of the Uruguay squad but Ibrahima Konate appears to be over the injury which kept him out of the last three games.

Liverpool face Brighton on March 31 and Curtis Jones is eyeing a return, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota not far behind.

Potential issues for Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo appear to be minor after they linked up with their national squads.

Here is your latest update of Liverpool injury news and return dates...

Darwin Nunez

Nunez is a doubt for Liverpool’s return to action after pulling out of the Uruguay squad.

The South Americans face friendlies against Basque Country, in Bilbao, and Ivory Coast, in the French city of Lens, but Nunez will play no part in those matches after it was confirmed he has dropped out of the squad.

Uruguay explained his absence as down to “physical issues”.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

A knee ligament injury picked up against Burnley at the start of February will keep Alexander-Arnold out for just over two months.

Klopp does not expect the England right-back to be fit for the immediate end of the break but “the week after” has been eyed for his return.

Potential return date: April 7, vs Manchester United

Luis Diaz

Klopp revealed after the United defeat that Diaz had picked up a groin problem during the FA Cup quarter-final. He was replaced by Bobby Clark during extra-time.

As things stand, he is still set to join up with the Colombia squad for friendlies against Spain and Romania, which take place in London and Madrid respectively - sparing him a long trip to South America.

He then linked up with his national team without any further issue earlier this week.

Cody Gakpo

Gakpo came on as a substitute at Old Trafford yet he picked up a twisted ankle, Klopp stated post-match.

The 24-year-old has been joined up with the Netherlands squad for games against Scotland and Germany in the coming week.

Potential return date: March 31, vs Brighton

Ibrahima Konate

An injury to French defender Konate in the Europa League trip to Sparta Prague has seen him miss Liverpool’s last three games.

Klopp expected him to miss the United cup tie as they waited on his return to training, but appeared optimistic that his comeback was close. Konate is now with the France national team and expected to feature in their games against Germany and Chile.

Diogo Jota

There were fears that Jota would be out for a long time after he was taken off on a stretcher in the mid-February win at Brentford.

Yet, Liverpool hope to see him back around the same time as Alexander-Arnold, with a midweek match against Sheffield United on the calendar before the next trip to Old Trafford.

Potential return date: April 7, vs Manchester United

Curtis Jones

Liverpool’s trip to Brentford led to multiple injury lay-offs with Jones among them after he sprained his ankle in west London.

But Klopp stated last week that he should have the midfielder back at his disposal once the international break ends.

Alisson Becker

The Reds have refused to put a timeframe on Alisson’s return from a hamstring injury labelled “rather serious” by manager Klopp.

The German has stated his confidence that the Brazilian goalkeeper will play again this season after he picked up the issue in training.

Potential return date: April/May 2024

Thiago Alcantara

Thiago’s short-lived return to the Liverpool squad in February’s FA Cup win at Arsenal led to another spell on the sidelines.

“There's no timescale,” admitted Klopp afterwards. “I don't know, to be honest. It's a couple of things [that] he has to do now from a medical point of view and then I don't know if that will then mean that he can play again [this season].”

Stefan Bajcetic

The ongoing issues around Bajcetic’s injury vulnerability were addressed by Klopp last week, as the 19-year-old begins his “pre-season” now he is in a “much better place” to deal with the physical stresses of playing week in, week out.

“So, in the moment he feels something, it’s not an injury, it’s intensity,” he explained. “He’s a young lad so we just have to make sure that we don’t use him before he is really ready because what happened before was that the body was not 100 per cent ready for the intensity that professional football is asking for.”

Potential return date: April/May 2024

Joel Matip

Liverpool are unlikely to see Matip back out on the pitch for them again.

The centre-back suffered a serious knee injury in December and his contract expires in the summer.

Ben Doak

Teenage winger Doak made his breakthrough into a number of Liverpool cup squads in the first half of the season.

But his campaign is likely to be over after he picked up a knee injury.
