Liverpool forward Ben Doak has been making quite the impression while away on international duty with Scotland this week. He gave $95m (£75m/€90m) Josko Gvardiol a torrid time with his direct running and will be looking to build on that against Poland tomorrow.

"On a bleak and miserable evening in Glasgow’s south side, the former Celtic prospect lit up proceedings time and time again, seemingly on a one-man mission to get his side going," the Daily Mail match report read as Scotland beat Croatia. "It’s hard to recall the last time a player wearing the dark blue of Scotland was able to get bums off seats with such regularity."

The BBC's verdict was similarly as enthusiastic about the Liverpool ace. "The margin of Scotland’s victory was tight. The margin of Doak’s superiority was vast," it said.

But Doak still has a long way to go before he is established at the top. At one stage in his career when he moved to Sporting CP, Ryan Gauld was being heralded as the "Scottish Lionel Messi" but he never reached those heights.

"He’ll just take it on his stride," Gauld said this week (via the Daily Mail). "As much as I’m sure he knows, there’s a lot of his game that he can work on. He’s got a big future ahead of him if he keeps up the way he’s been playing so far."

Asked what advice he would give to Doak, the response was simple. "Shut it out. Don’t listen to it as much as possible," he said. "Just focus on football, play your game and listen to the ones around about you at your club and do what you can to get better.

"With me it was just noise, I guess. I tried not to think too much about it. Obviously, I was young and in a different country (in Portugal), so it was nice to not understand everything that was being said. I could just try and focus on the football."

"His pace is scary. He’s a good lad," teammate Lyndon Dykes added. "He’s at Middlesbrough at the moment, getting game time, but he’s performing week in, week out. The experienced boys here have got him under their arm and he’s learning every day. I’m sure he’s going to have a great Scotland career and club career."

Liverpool.com says: Doak is a huge talent but Gauld is right that he still needs time and patience to further develop. Both Liverpool and Scotland know that. His loan in the Championship with Middlesbrough is going well and that was the ideal next step.
