There were mixed fortunes for Carlisle United’s young loan players in their latest outings over the weekend.

Anton Dudik tasted victory with South Shields but the trio of Aran Fitzpatrick, Jake Allan and Sam Hetherington were on the losing side with Workington Reds.

Striker Dudik was a substitute for South Shields in their National League North clash with King’s Lynn Town.

The Ukrainian came off the bench for his third Mariners appearance in the 85th minute at 1st Cloud Arena.

Shields led through goals from Paul Blackett and Kyle Crossley and, despite a late King’s Lynn strike from Kian Ronan, they held on to win 2-1 in dramatic circumstances – the visitors missing a late penalty through Jonny Margetts.

Dudik and his team-mates moved up to 14th in the table and go to Kidderminster Harriers – whose assistant manager is former Blues boss Neil McDonald – on Tuesday night.

For Workington, meanwhile, there were starts for Fitzpatrick, Allan and Hetherington, but Mark Fell’s side went down to a 3-0 defeat at Gainsborough Trinity in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Hetherington was replaced in the 86th minute, an injury having seen Fitzpatrick substituted after just 23 minutes, Allan playing the full game as goals from Dylan Cogill, Jordan Helliwell and Fraser Preston earned the points for the hosts.

Next up for Reds and their young Blues in the league is a trip to FC United of Manchester next weekend, while Workington also face Whitehaven AFC in the Fred Conway Cumberland Cup at Borough Park tomorrow.

A number of ex-United men were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.

Jerry Yates fired Derby County’s goal in their 1-1 Championship draw with Plymouth Argyle.

In the same division, Nahki Wells was on target in Bristol City’s 2-0 victory at Norwich City.

And yesterday James Trafford kept a clean sheet as Burnley defeated Swansea City 1-0.

In the Premier League, Jarrad Branthwaite’s return to the Everton starting line-up coincided with a clean sheet as the Toffees drew 0-0 at West Ham United, keeper Jordan Pickford also impressing.

Dean Henderson, meanwhile, was on the losing side as Crystal Palace were beaten 2-0 at home by Fulham.

In the National League, Gavin Skelton’s return to the dugout with Hartlepool United ended in a high-scoring defeat.

The former Blues assistant, now first-team coach with Pools, saw his new side lose 5-3 at leaders York City.

In National League North, Andy Preece’s Chorley are top after a 2-1 home win over Leamington.

NPL Premier saw a Nathan Thomas strike and a hat-trick from former Blues trialist Stephen Walker in Whitby Town’s 4-3 win at Basford United, Gary Liddle the Whitby assistant manager.

Owen Windsor hit Leek Town’s consolation in their 2-1 defeat at the hands of FC United of Manchester.

Mark Cullen was on target for Bamber Bridge as they lost 3-2 at Matlock Town in the same division.

In the FA Vase, manager Dan Kirkup led Carlisle City to the third round after a 2-0 win over Blyth Town, with Callum Birdsall’s double seeing City equal their best ever run in the competition.

And in Northern League Division One, Darren Edmondson’s Penrith claimed a 2-1 win at Seaham Red Star to go 12th.

North of the border, Peter Murphy’s Queen of the South were held 1-1 at home by Alloa Athletic, the Doonhamers sixth in the table – four points and two places above Annan Athletic, who also drew 1-1 with Stenhousemuir, Josh Todd on target for the Galabankies.

In Australia’s A-League, Zach Clough fired Adelaide United’s winner in their 2-1 victory over Western United.
