Former Wales rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit has revealed exactly what he's getting up to right now as he settles into life back in Florida.

In an interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars on YouTube, Rees-Zammit spoke candidly about his role on the 17-player practice squad for the NFL outfit.

"My role on the practice squad is basically giving our defence the best looks possible to prepare them for a game on the weekend," explained the 23-year-old.

"We are kind of the opposition offence, if you like.

"Then we'll give the defence hundreds of looks, just to give them the best idea of how the offence is going to play."

The former Gloucester Rugby winger called time on his rugby career in January this year, opting to enter the NFL's International Player Pathway Program. He has spoken previously about his father's love for American football, and that it was always a dream of his to play in the NFL, despite playing rugby for a large portion of his young adult life.

"When I was playing rugby, it was obviously hard to try and learn a different sport at the same time," added Rees-Zammit.

"Being able to just fly out to Florida and learn the sport every day for three months was amazing. It would have been very tough for me to do that if I hadn't done what I did in rugby.

"So, I'm very grateful for that, otherwise I wouldn't be here right now. The NFL has always been a dream of mine, it was just about the timing and when I was going to have the opportunity to try and make it, and here we are today."

For those unfamiliar with American football, being on the practice squad means that you help the regular 53-man roster prepare for each game day. As a practice squad player, you have the opportunity to be elevated to the active roster up to three times in a single season.

If a player has already been elevated three times, and the coach wishes to elevate that player again, then they must be signed to the 53-man active roster. In next year's NFL draft, Jaguars will have the opportunity to sign Rees-Zammit to their 53-man roster permanently, if they believe he is ready for first-team football.

Rees-Zammit has recently explained that he has not closed the door on rugby. Speaking on Danny Care's YouTube podcast, Rees-Zammit said: "I’ve watched every game of Gloucester’s this year, so it’s not something that’s like completely off the table.

"But I’m still...this is my dream, I’m chasing this dream as far as I can and I’m working so hard every day to make this happen. So I’m not really thinking about rugby too much to be honest with you.

"I enjoy watching it, I miss it a little bit but at the same time this is my full goal and dream to make it in the NFL. I’m trying to work as hard as I can to make this dream a reality."
