Swansea City boss Luke Williams admits he's keen on sealing a move for free agent Cyrus Christie.

The Irish international has been training with the Swans since the most recent international break, and Williams has been impressed by his impact over the last few weeks.

The club are set to continue to run the rule over the 32-year-old, and Williams admits adding Christie would potentially be beneficial to his squad.

"He's still training with us," Williams said. "Potentially we may be able to have a conversation with Cyrus and his agent to see if there's something that could be done as he's looking sharp and physically he's in good condition.

"We know how good he is as a player and what a great guy he is. So there's a lot we like about Cyrus.

"I think he potentially would be [a useful asset]. Obviously Kristian Pedersen has been out for quite a while and we have a young guy in Nelson Abbey that we like a lot. But we've two experienced central defenders that have been really pretty incredible. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here.

"If we were to lose one of those guys, we'd potentially lose a chunk of experience going out of the team, so it could potentially be a good fit.

"I think he can play anywhere across the back. In a back three as well. Wingback, full-back, centre-half. Very, very accomplished player. He's still got his power and his pace."

Should the Swans opt for a move, it would be Christie's second spell with the Swans, after his stint under Russell Martin in the second half of the 2021/22 season.

Christie initially arrived on loan, but was made a free agent the following summer after being released by parent club Fulham.

While there was clearly some appetite to bring him back to the club, a deal never materialised, with Christie later claiming the club's American owners opted against offering a contract due to his age.

"I think it's true that each player has to be cross-referenced with what you already have in the building," Williams added. "So too old for one squad, just right for another squad. Too young for one squad, just right for another squad. It depends on what you already have in the building in my opinion.

"So it's difficult for me to talk about the decision that was made when I wasn't here. Potentially they felt like they didn't have enough young players, or they had too many senior players.

"So potentially that was a valid reason at the time. I'm not so sure that's valid now because I think we have a lot of young players. Each player, their contract, or situation is unique to that moment in time and what else is going on.

"I'm not sure exactly if that was the truth was before, or what the situation was as I wasn't here."

While Christie is still in the building, Williams recently revealed that experienced winger Adam Reach is no longer training with the club, with the Swans opting against offering him a contract.

"He's such a good player, so there was a prospect of him signing," Williams added. "But in my opinion we would probably be blocking somebody we see with a more long-term future at the club.

"Of course, on balance, if we felt Adam was going to give us a huge spike, then so be it. Someone would have to wait for their opportunity, but I felt like he wasn't quite in that place.

"I'm pretty sure he's going to be in that place again, once he gets fully up to speed, because he's a really, really good player.

"But we felt like it probably wasn't the right decision for us at the moment."
