The atmosphere turned sour at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon as Luton Town's Premier League survival hopes were dealt a severe blow with a 3-1 defeat to West Ham. The Hatters' boss, Rob Edwards, watched his side succumb to the Hammers, sparking tensions in the away end.

As the reality of their Premier League dreams crumbling set in, Luton fans clashed with West Ham stewards. Social media footage shows a few supporters being escorted out of the stadium before the situation escalated.

Security reinforcements were called into the away end as more fans got involved in the fracas. The scene quickly spiralled out of control, with several fans and stewards tumbling down stairs amidst the chaos.

Police swiftly stepped in to defuse the situation, but it was a bitter end to the day for the travelling Luton faithful. The 3-1 loss leaves them teetering on the brink of relegation to the Championship.

Luton left themselves on the brink of relegation ahead of Nottingham Forest's meeting with Chelsea later on Saturday evening. Forest started that game three points above the drop zone with a superior goal difference, reports the Express.

Despite an early lead from Albert Sambi Lokonga, who is on loan from Arsenal, Luton's hopes of a miraculous escape were dashed in the second half. James Ward-Prowse equalised in the 54th minute, but Tomas Soucek and George Earthy scored for the home side to ensure a comeback from their previous top-flight disaster at Chelsea.

A visibly emotional Edwards acknowledged the away fans after the defeat, as the harsh reality of their impending Championship relegation set in.

The Hatters have put up a brave fight to maintain their Premier League status this season, matching many teams, but they've just missed out on their dream of securing another season in the top flight.

Luton will conclude their Premier League journey next Sunday afternoon at Kenilworth Road against Fulham, who suffered a 4-0 defeat by title contenders Man City earlier in the day.
