Malik Tillman changes EVERYTHING for Celtic with new Champions League rules as Rangers fans all left ruing the same thing
Dazzling Malik Tillman downed Shakhtar Donetsk at the death in the Champions League - and gave Celtic a massive helping hand in the process.
PSV were staring down the barrel of a defeat against the Ukrainians on home turf, trailing 2-0 and seemingly down and out despite Pedrinho's red card offering them some hope. But with 87 minutes on the clock, Tillman came up clutch. He caught the keeper out with a free-kick from a tight angle and then melted one into the top corner from 25 yards to level things up, before Ricardo Pepi's 95th minute winner sparked remarkable scenes and sent Eindhoven bonkers.
We were promised the new Champions League format would lead to plenty of drama and dynamic movement within the table - and so it has proved. That late comeback completely changed the complexion of the battle for places in the top 24, and handed Celtic a major boost.
Why is that? Had Shakhtar won, they would have been breathing down Celtic's neck on seven points. Real Madrid, currently in 24th place on six points, would have dropped out of the qualifying spots, while PSV would have nestled in behind them on five.
It would have meant that two teams outside the top 24, Real and PSV, would have been within one result of catching them. A perilous position for the Parkhead side to be in, particularly with goal difference now the primary decider instead of head to head. But PSV's Tillman-inspired comeback changed all of that.
PSV's victory now means every team outside the top 24 is on four points or fewer, and need two results to match Celtic's points total of eight. It gives the Hoops, along with Juventus, PSV and Man City, a cushion of four points to fall back on, as opposed to just two had things stayed as they were. Given PSG are the unlucky 25th-placed team as things stand, and likely to rack up some points in their remaining three games, that's extremely valuable.
Rangers fans have more pressing concerns with a Europa League tie against Nice to worry about, but the irony of their former hero Tillman giving their rivals a helping hand certainly wasn't lost on social media. The Hoops now realistically need just one win from their final three games to qualify for the knockout phase and can secure that against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday December 10.If not, they will have two more chances to get it - against Young Boys or Aston Villa after the winter break.
