Man City injury update: Phil Foden, Savinho, Oscar Bobb latest news and return dates

Manchester City have made it three wins from three in a blistering start to their Premier League title defence, and without two of their most influential players.

While Erling Haaland has scored back-to-back hat-tricks, last season’s Player of the Year, Phil Foden, has been risked to just 45 minutes while Rodri, the midfield engine room, has failed to get on the pitch.

However, both are nearing a return to fitness, while Savinho is not too far behind. Oscar Bobb is the only long-term absentee.

Phil Foden

Illness kept Foden out of the wins over Ipswich and West Ham and now the midfielder is expected to sit out the upcoming international break with England.

Pep Guardiola said: "Hopefully after the international break he will be ready. He played 45 minutes against Chelsea and after he didn't feel good.

"We made tests, he feels better but he doesn't feel perfect so we prefer to give him time to come back after the international break and be ready for the next games."

Asked whether Foden is likely to feature for the Three Lions Guardiola responded: “I don’t think so right now. I think he will not go, but I don’t know. He doesn’t feel well — otherwise he would be here. But like I said before, national teams decide.

“He doesn’t feel good. It’s his stomach, a little, little virus. Some people said antibiotics and so on will be fine.”

Potential return date: September 14, vs Brentford

Savinho

It’s been a stop-start opening few weeks for Savinho at Manchester City.

The young Brazilian has impressed on the pitch, but was withdrawn at half-time of his debut against Chelsea. He then grabbed an assist in a thumping win over Ipswich before missing the victory over West Ham entirely with a knee injury.

Speaking ahead of the game at the London Stadium, Guardiola said of Savinho: “He has 10 days off and hopefully he can recover.”

He added: “He doesn’t feel good, some problems with the knee. Hopefully with 10 days off he can be back after the international break.”

Rodri

Three games in and Rodri is still without a Premier League minute under his belt.

Having picked up a hamstring injury in the Euro 2024 final, he was given an extended break and made a late start to pre-season training. Guardiola stated in August that the midfielder was set for a gradual comeback.

Before the win over Ipswich, Guardiola said: "He’s okay, he had an injury with the national team and he still has some niggles, but I saw him yesterday [last Thursday] quite highly I’d say. It’s just a question of when he rejoins the group for the training sessions."

He was on the bench against West Ham but did not come on, so is expected to be up to speed after the international break.

Oscar Bobb

Norwegian winger Bobb has undergone surgery on a broken leg which has put the buffers on what looked like a promising start to the season.

“It was in the training session and unfortunately he had a big impact and is injured,” Guardiola told reporters earlier this month. “He will have surgery and hopefully he will be well and we welcome him back as soon as possible in three, four months.

“We are so sad for him, but not because he was making an incredible pre-season, because that doesn’t matter, when [the] injury is a long time it is a problem and we’re looking forward to seeing him again as soon as possible. A good recovery as quick as possible and that’s all.”

Potential return date: November/December 2024
