Man City just scored a classic goal they never score - it could be bad news for two injured players

When was the last time one Manchester City winger crossed for the other to score?

City wingers are known for driving to the byline, putting it into a dangerous area and there's always someone there to convert. In recent seasons, that person has often been Erling Haaland, but in the pre-Haaland era it was often a midfielder arriving late or the opposite winger who timed their run perfectly.

In terms of an old-school, winger-to-winger goal though? It just doesn't happen these days - it's been at least a year.

With injuries biting - and two more players adding to the injury list at Tottenham - Pep Guardiola fielded a side with a mix of rotation and form in mind. It certainly wasn't a teamsheet that was a manager trying to throw the competition, but he equally didn't have many more options.

It meant that Savinho and Matheus Nunes lined up on the two flanks again, for the third game in a row. For Nunes, it was the first time in his City career that he had started three games in succession. For Savinho (albeit in a much shorter time period) it was only the second time.

Both are vying for the unlikely title of City's best creator at the early stage of the season. Savinho is yet to score but has four assists before this one. Nunes has taken his chance with both hands - scoring two and assisting four after his cross for Haaland at the weekend.

When Savinho teed up his full-back, dropped a shoulder and crossed to the back post for Nunes to score at Spurs, it was not just a welcome goal back on the stroke of half-time, but it was also the first time in forever that one winger had successfully found another to score.

The likes of Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva have all got plenty of assists in the last season or two - but often through cut-backs. Haaland has taken most of the service and added to his ridiculous tally.

In the treble season, when one winger slowed things down, the other would offer more creativity. There are no examples going back to the start of last season of a simple cross to the back post from one wide player to another. Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane want a word. So does Riyad Mahrez.

Nunes now has three goals and five assists this season from 11 appearances (four totalled nine minutes combined) - averaging a goal involvement every 62 minutes. Savinho is quietly racking up the assists to justify his summer arrival. City will hope his injury isn't too bad.

Since Haaland's arrival it has been arguably at the expense of a true wing partnership. That's hardly an issue given his goals and the trophies that he has brought in.

But with Haaland rested, Guardiola showed that he can still get an effective duo on opposite flanks - giving Grealish and Doku more work to do when they return.
