Man City 4-1 Liverpool LIVE! Grealish goal - LIVE! Premier League result, match stream, latest updates today

Man City vs Liverpool LIVE!

Manchester City showed they can win without goal machine Erling Haaland as they put four goals past Liverpool at the Etihad on Saturday to keep their chase of Premier League leaders Arsenal very much alive. Julian Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Jack Grealish were all on target for Pep Guardiola's side in an entertaining return to Premier League action after the international break.

The victory pulled City to within five points of the Gunners, who play Leeds United later on Saturday. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring early for Juergen Klopp's side, who are sixth in the top flight and fighting for a Champions League berth, before City took ever more complete control of the match as time went on.

Haaland, who has scored 42 goals in 37 matches in all competitions since joining City this season from Borussia Dortmund, suffered a groin injury against Burnley on March 18. Read the game back below with our dedicated match blog!

74min: It's a thumping.

Grealish slides home De Bruyne's cutback, and he’s deserved one today. He has been outstanding.

14:03 , Alex Young

70min: Liverpool make FOUR changes.

Nunez, Tsimikas, Firmino and Oxlade-Chamberlain are on to save the day.

Salah, Elliott, Jota and Robertson make way.

14:00 , Alex Young

68min: ...and Firmino and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

13:59 , Alex Young

67min: Nunez and Tsimikas are set to come on for Liverpool.

13:58 , Alex Young

65min: Liverpool’s heads have dropped - and you can’t blame them - and City are passing the ball around with ease.

Still plenty of time in this and City have been a tad leaky of late.

13:53 , Alex Young

60min: Oh, it’s actually a dreadful dive from Gakpo.

13:52 , Alex Young

59min: Oh wow, surely that’s a penalty! Ake appears to have tripped Gakpo inside the area.

City go straight up the other end and Grealish forces a fine save out of Alisson.

13:49 , Alex Young

56min: Gakpo’s deflected shot spins inches past the far post but that won’t quieten the home crowd. The Etihad is rocking.

GOAL!

13:47 , Alex Young

Alvarez jinks inside the area and sees his shot blocked and then Gundogan has all the time in the world to prod home from eight yards.

13:42 , Alex Young

50min: Gakpo brings the ball down inside the area and thumps it straight at Alisson, but he’s a yard off and again the flag is late.

GOAL!

13:40 , Alex Young

Alvarez feeds Mahrez down the left, who spins a superb cross from De Bruyne to tuck home in the penalty area.

Delay to the restart as the referee’s headset isn’t working.

13:34 , Alex Young

Teams are back out. We’ll be back underway shortly.

13:26 , Alex Young

A thrilling first half an hour or so of football - Salah and Alvarez with the goals - before the crunching tackles and moaning to the referee began.

A big 45 to come.

Half-time!

13:19 , Alex Young

47min: That was some of the best football we’ve seen in a while.

13:18 , Alex Young

13:16 , Alex Young

43min: Incredible first touch from Mahrez on the right as he takes on Robertson, gets the better of him before his shot is blocked by Van Dijk. Gundogan sees his follow-up also blocked before the ball falls to an offside De Bruyne.

13:15 , Alex Young

41min: This lineman keeps forgetting to put his flag up. Bizarre.

13:11 , Alex Young

38min: It’s Trent vs Jack yet again but again the Liverpool man gets away without a booking.

Starting to get a bit feisty across the pitch now.

13:09 , Alex Young

37min: What is the linesman doing? Well, nothing, it seems, as Salah runs through but is clearly offside. City clear and still no flag as the home fans moan.

Alexander-Arnold trips Grealish to give away a foul, but he obviously doesn’t agree and gives the same linesman a piece of his mind.

13:07 , Alex Young

35min: Rodri, who just a minute earlier was booked, drags back Gakpo. Liverpool players immediately surround the referee to remind him of that fact but Simon Hooper lets the City midfielder off this time.

Grealish with the perfect drilled pass put Alvarez to slot home.

12:58 , Alex Young

27min: Oh wow, it should be 2-0!

Elliott releases Salah into acres and it should be a simply pass across goal to play Jota in to score, but Grealish puts in a superb tackle.

12:57 , Alex Young

24min: Liverpool are chasing shadows, but they won’t care at the moment. Sitting deep to frustrate a City team buzzing all around them.

12:54 , Alex Young

21min: Almost an instant reply from City as Mahrez catches a half-volley superbly inside the area, but it fizzes over the bar.

City back on top, just not in the scoreline.

GOAL!

12:49 , Alex Young

Great ball from Alexander-Arnold to Jota to create the chance.

12:47 , Alex Young

15min: Mahrez goes inside wide with a fine curling free kick from the edge of the area.

12:46 , Alex Young

13min: Alvarez playing then classic false nine role: dropping deep and dragging in the centre-backs to leave space for De Bruyne running in behind.

12:43 , Alex Young

11min: Rodri shoots straight at Alisson.

Liverpool struggling to get out of their own half.

12:40 , Alex Young

9min: City firmly on top and are clearly targetting Alexander-Arnold, this time Gundogan is in behind but can’t properly test Alisson.

12:38 , Alex Young

6min: The free kick is played across the ground to the right where Alvarez floats in a cross which Alisson claims with ease.

12:38 , Alex Young

12:35 , Alex Young

12:28 , Alex Young

Here come the teams. We are minutes away. The start of the Premier League run-in begins imminently.

12:18 , Alex Young

Quite a few empty seats at the Etihad for one of their biggest games of the season. Just over 10 minutes until kick-off.

Klopp has a no-Haaland plan

12:08 , Alex Young

Now it’s the Liverpool manager’s turn to speak to BT Sport.

On Haaland: Yes [we prepared for no Haaland], but it’s not like this. Last moment is really when Haaland gets involved, but all the other moments are quite similar.”

11:55 , Alex Young

Pep Guardiola has been talking to BT Sport ahead of the game.

On Haaland: "He is much, much better but he is not fully fit for today. He doesn't feel proper. It is not a big issue but today he was not right, so no [need to] risk.”

On title race: "There are a lot of games of football left and a lot of things can happen. We don't feel as though Arsenal will drop many points but hopefully we can be there as long as possible.

"I would love to be in Arsenal's position but until the last moment we will fight. We have done it for many, many years. It is step by step, game by game and we will see what happens."

So, as expected, Manchester City top scorer Erling Haaland isn't in the squad as he recovers from the groin injury picked up before the international break.

Pep Guardiola makes six changes from the win over Burnley in the FA Cup as Ederson, John Stones, Nathan Ake, Ilkay Gundogan, Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji all come in.

It's two changes for Liverpool as Jordan Henderson and Harvey Elliott come in for James Milner and Darwin Nunez.

Man City XI

No Haaland.

It sounds like Harvey Elliott today starts for Liverpool, and Thiago Alcantara is a surprise inclusion in the squad.

Confirmed teams are imminent.

Guardiola jealous of Arsenal

11:14 , Alex Young

Pep Guardiola is convinced Arsenal's eight-point advantage in the title race counts for far more than Manchester City's past experience of winning the Premier League.

Mind games?

"I would love to be in the position of Arsenal, rather than the experience of winning four Premier Leagues in five years," the Spaniard said. "The advantage is that they are eight points in front of us, this is the real advantage. The past is the past, experience doesn't count. Absolutely not. Every day you start anew.

"When I hear, so many times, managers or players say, 'I don't have to show anything, I don't have to demonstrate anything (because of what) I've done in the past', it's the most awful sentence.

"You have to prove it every single day again and again and again. The past is the past. If people think, 'I don't have to show anything' - no, you have to, again and again, otherwise you have to retire."

Score prediction

10:52 , Alex Young

Liverpool have stepped up in some of the bigger games this season but City looked to be hitting ominous form before the break. If Haaland plays, Klopp’s leaky defence surely do not have enough to stop him at the Etihad.

Man City to win 2-1.

Nunez is IN

10:41 , Alex Young

Liverpool have received a triple boost ahead of today’s game.

Darwin Nunez has recovered from a cut ankle which forced him out of international duty with Uruguay while long-term injured players Luis Diaz and Thiago Alcantara are set to rejoin full training next week.

"Luis is back in small parts of training after a very long time out," Jurgen Klopp confirmed to reporters yesterday. "It was fantastic to have him back, such an energiser and boost, but he will not train today with us.

"This week was the first step back into training, next week he will increase that and then he is ready I think. We have to judge him every day how he deals with the intensity but it looks really promising."

Thiago has missed almost two months with a hip problem but Klopp said: "Thiago is not back in team training yet but I think if things go well he will probably be part of next week's team training."

Haaland is OUT

10:27 , Alex Young

A decision is still to be made on Erling Haaland, with Guardiola confirming the Norway international would need Friday’s training session before a conclusion can be drawn, though reports claim the striker will not be risked despite his manager’s suggestions otherwise.

“Yesterday I spoke to him and he feels good but we’ll see what happens,” Guardiola said.

“Life is risks in these stages and you have to take it - he’s scored an incredible amount of goals - but in the past we have always scored a lot of goals in the season.”

Phil Foden will around two weeks of action after undergoing surgery for appendicitis.

Welcome

10:11 , Alex Young

Good morning and welcome to the Evening Standard’s LIVE coverage of the Premier League clash between Manchester City and Liverpool.

It’s the champions welcoming the fourth-placed hopefuls in a game usually picked up as a title-decided fixture. Not this season though, but both teams still need a victory to keep their end-of-season aims on track.

City must win to avoid Arsenal moving even further clear at the top, while anything less than a win for the Reds will make the tough task of finishing fourth almost impossible.

Kick-off at the Etihad Stadium is at 12.30pm. Stick with us.
