Cristiano Ronaldo has previously warned that no Manchester United manager should talk down their chances of winning titles as Ruben Amorim prepares to take over from Erik ten Hag.

Amorim has an agreement in principle with United to become the new head coach and it comes six-and-a-half years after the 39-year-old spent time with the then-United manager Jose Mourinho at the club's Carrington Training Complex. A statement by Sporting Clube de Portugal have confirmed United's approach over Amorim and the club's intention to pay his €10million (£8.34m) release clause.

For now, Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in charge of the Carabao Cup tie at home to Leicester City on Wednesday night. The club have so far refused to clarify how long the former Reds striker will be in charge but there is that important game on the weekend against Chelsea.

While Ronaldo and Ten Hag didn't often see eye-to-eye during the Portuguese's second stint at Old Trafford, he made his feelings clear over the Dutchman's comments suggesting the team can't challenge for the Premier League and the Champions League. "But as I told you, Manchester, they need to rebuild everything, in my opinion," Ronaldo told Rio Ferdinand's podcast.

"The coach, they say they cannot compete to win the league and Champions League. (As) Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win the league or Champions League. You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don’t have that potential, but I cannot say that. We’re going to try. You have to try."

With incoming manager Amorim however, United can expect an ambitious coach who will challenge on all fronts. The Portuguese boss, who won 12 trophies during his playing days, has always carried that ambition on in his coaching career.

He has so far won six titles as manager, five with Sporting and one with SC Braga. "Whether we win or not, the hunger to win titles will remain the same," Amorim previously reiterated.

"Winning or not, the responsibility is the same one. We want to win, it's always good to win but then the other titles are just as important, if not more important, whether you win or lose."
