Man United make stunning boardroom decision after Nottingham Forest inflict defeat
Manchester United have dramatically parted company with sporting director Dan Ashworth after just five months at Old Trafford. The decision was made, reports the Athletic, in the boardroom following Nottingham Forest's 3-2 win at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.
Ashworth, formerly of West Brom, Brighton and who also spent time in the England set-up, joined United in the summer after a period of gardening leave following his departure from Newcastle United, but things have gone awry already chief executive Omar Berrada broke the news to him after seeing the Reds emerge victorious.
It's a decision which was reportedly instigated by part owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has recently reshuffled the hierarchy at United; as well as Ashworth and Berrada, he has also introduced Sir Dave Brailsford to help oversee an improvement in performance. Jason Wilcox also joined from Southampton, but Ashworth has already left the club.
United recently changed managers and Ruben Amorim has replaced Erik ten Hag in charge, but Forest - as Arsenal did in the week - inflicted a damaging defeat on Saturday to ensure that the Portuguese boss' reign has encountered speed bumps early into his tenure.
Forest were good value for their win, thanks to goals from Nikola Milenkovic, who headed in a corner within two minutes. Despite Rasmus Hojlund equalising, Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood put Nuno Espirito Santo's men back in control. Bruno Fernandes replied for United but the Reds hung on and returned to fifth. For the Red Devils, there are more problems and now further issues have been unearthed higher up the club structure.
