Man United's exciting next generation offers Ruben Amorim intrigue as 16-year-old ace makes mark

Manchester United's academy has long been vaunted as one of the best in the business and continues to produce players for the first team and beyond at a rate of knots.

The Reds have had a homegrown player in every squad for more than 85 years in a remarkable record that looks certain to continue to grow. New manager Ruben Amorim arrives at Old Trafford with a history of promoting youth and may well in time dip into the academy to promote players to the first team.

For now, those youngsters at United will seek success with the Under-21s and Under-18s. Here's your evening United headlines.

Eight stars to watch

In the absence of several senior figures at Carrington on Monday, new Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim invited a crop of the club's academy players to participate in first-team training.

Over the years, it has not been uncommon for players from either the Under-21s or the Under-18s to make the step-up to first-team training to make up the numbers, meaning there is no guarantee those who were involved on Monday will still be in situ by the end of this week once more members of the international contingent return.

Nevertheless, being handed the opportunity to train in front of the new boss on his first day on the training ground must have felt significant. Amorim is understood to be a big supporter of developing young players and bringing through academy-developed players.

With that in mind, MEN Sport has selected eight United youngsters who will be aspiring to become part of Amorim's long-term plans, even though several of them are still some way off becoming first-team options.

United promote exciting starlet

United youngster Jim Thwaites took part in first-team training on Monday, despite being aged just 16 years old. There are multiple senior players who are still away on international duty, meaning youngsters were needed to make up the numbers in Ruben Amorim's first training session.

Among the academy players to be called up was Thwaites, who was also given the opportunity to train with the first-team by Erik ten Hag ahead of facing Brighton in August. Thwaites is considered as one of the academy's leading prospects in his age group and won the club's Goal of the Season award for both Under-16 and Under-18 level last term. The youngster's great form has continued into this campaign and he recently scored a stunning free-kick.
