Given the imminent arrival of Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, it is no surprise that Viktor Gyokeres' Champions League heroics drew so much attention on Tuesday evening.

The Swedish forward has been a revelation under Amorim, scoring 66 goals in 67 games, and his hat-trick in their 4-1 win over Man City has only added further fuel to the fire amid rumours he could join his manager by moving to Old Trafford.

But he was not the only forward recently linked with a move to United to catch the eye in the Champions League this week.

When United were drawing up replacements for Anthony Martial in the summer, Lille's Jonathan David featured prominently in their thinking.

The Canadian international is out of contract at the end of this season and was believed to have been available for around £25million in the summer.

In the end, United opted to sign Dutch international forward Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna in a deal worth £33million and it is a decision that already looks like being questionable.

While Zirkzee has failed to score since bagging the winning goal on his Premier League debut against Fulham in August, David has bagged 13 goals in all competitions this term.

His goal in Lille's 1-1 draw with Juventus was his seventh goal in his last nine Champions League games and the 24-year-old is almost certain to move on to bigger and better things.

A report this week suggested United could even cut their losses with Zirkzee already after a slow start to life in England and links with Gyokeres won't go away.

While writing Zirkzee off so early into his United career feels a little premature, Amorim will be keen to address United's goalscoring problem.

If a move for Gyokeres proves to be elusive then David, who can operate across the front three and is still set to be available on a free transfer next summer, is a more than adequate transfer alternative.
