Newcastle United target Marc Guehi has admitted that 'life is hard' after winless Crystal Palace made their worst start to a Premier League season in 32 years.

Crystal Palace remain in the relegation zone after Oliver Glanser's team suffered their fifth defeat of the season against Nottingham Forest on Monday night. The last time Crystal Palace picked up so few points from their opening eight top-flight fixtures was back in 1992 when the Eagles were ultimately relegated.

It is a far cry from how Crystal Palace ended last season, when the Eagles won six of their final seven games, but Glasner's side have sorely felt the loss of forward Michael Olise and defender Joachim Andersen, who joined Bayern Munich and Fulham respectively. Crystal Palace did manage to hang on to Guehi, but chairman Steve Parish will be hard-pressed to get 'superstar money' for the England international in 2025 given that he will have just 18 months left on his contract in January.

Guehi, for his part, cut a frustrated figure following Crystal Palace's 2-1 defeat at Everton last month, bemoaning how his side 'need a better mentality as a group', and the club captain called on those around him to 'keep fighting' following their latest loss at the City Ground.

"Life's hard and you have to deal with it," he told Premier League Productions after the 1-0 defeat. "You have to keep fighting to get better. It's important that we stick together. You have to keep going and we will keep going for sure."

Crystal Palace could have secured a club-record sale for Guehi, but Newcastle stopped formally bidding weeks before the summer window shut after the Magpies felt that Parish's demands went beyond the club's limits and beyond what they should be paying. Parish has since claimed that Crystal Palace 'want to be selling to clubs like Newcastle, who have got great aspirations', but it is hard to imagine the Eagles now getting anywhere near their mooted £70m asking price.
