Mark Lawwell Celtic exit 'big plus' as shows Brendan Rodgers taking summer recruitment seriously in bigger role

Peter Grant reckons Mark Lawwell leaving his post at Celtic shows Brendan Rodgers taking more of a hand in summer recruitment.

The Hoops secured the Premiership title this evening and, during the celebrations, talk moved to what might be next for the club and their summer spending to compete in the new-look Champions League. More money comes with qualifying for the elite tournament and Grant believes Rodgers will have much more of a say in which players arrive for next term.

Earlier this season the manager claimed he was there to coach the players signed by the recruitment team and make those better he was given by his staff.

But Grant insists that won't be the case next season as the behind the scenes exit of Lawwell and scout Joe Dudgeon shows already. Speaking on BBC Sportsound he said: "I think you'll see the changes that's already been in the background. I think with Lawwell going, I think that's a big plus for them because that tells me that Brendan's actually making the decisions now. With him going that makes him say, 'This is my role, my duty to do that. Yes I'll listen to the guys in the background who's going to see players and recommending them but I'll make the final decision on them'.

"And he'll know the ballpark he's got to play in. We're talking about Joe Hart, I think that's the biggest position for them because you seen the big problem they had before trying to replace a goalkeeper, it's such a vital position for the way Brendan wants his team to play."
