Mason Mount's four-word Ruud van Nistelrooy message exposes true Man United feelings
Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has paid tribute to Ruud van Nistelrooy after the Dutchman departed Old Trafford on Monday.
Van Nistelrooy returned to United for the first time since his controversial exit as a player in the summer, joining as Erik ten Hag's assistant manager after Mitchell van der Gaag departed. It was speculated that the ex-striker was being groomed for Ten Hag's job should Ineos choose to fire the manager.
However, when this inevitable decision finally transpired it was clear that Van Nistelrooy was not seen as the successor but merely a caretaker for a permanent appointment. Sir Jim Ratcliffe moved quickly to appoint Sporting boss Ruben Amorim as the next United manager with Van Nistelrooy taking charge of four matches before the Portuguese took over the reins on November 11.

Upon his arrival at Carrington, Amorim decided to part ways with Van Nistelrooy and a number of other members from Ten Hag's tenure to make room for his staff. This difficult decision has led to several United players paying tribute to Van Nistelrooy.
The latest to do so is Mount who posted on Wednesday evening: "Thank you, Ruud! Legend!"
Mount made just one brief appearance for Van Nistelrooy during his interim tenure at Old Trafford coming on during the 2-0 victory over PAOK in the Europa League. The former Chelsea midfielder was an unused substitute for the 3-0 victory against Leicester City at the weekend.
It has been difficult for Mount since he joined the club at the beginning of last season. He has managed just 26 appearances for the club with one goal and one assist to his name as injuries plagued him.
