Matthijs de Ligt has suggested Manchester United's critics should be patient before judging new signings.

Former manager Erik ten Hag was heavily backed in the summer transfer window and De Ligt was one of five signings, joining from Bayern Munich for an initial €45million (£38.4m).

A potential further €5m (£4.2m) in add-ons were included in the deal and some fans questioned why Bayern allowed De Ligt to leave the Allianz Arena for such a reasonable fee.

De Ligt's inclusion in the starting XI was delayed due to Harry Maguire's strong performances, but he's now first choice in central defence with Lisandro Martinez and contributed towards keeping a clean sheet against Leicester City, who struggled to threaten United on Sunday.

The 26-year-old spoke to MUTV after the win against Leicester and provided insight into what it's like to sign for United, discussing high expectations from those 'outside' the club.

"Three points were really important. Three goals scored and a clean sheet. In some phases, we were a little bit sloppy today, so this is where you can make it difficult for yourself," he said.

"But with a 3-0, you can only be happy. I see the spirit now in the team, which is really nice. The will to win and survive today was really good, so hopefully we can continue like that.

"When you come to a new team, you need an adjustment period I think, but nobody from the outside gives you this time. That's not an excuse, you have to start from the beginning.

"I also have to say a big compliment to Josh [Zirkzee] for how he came in. He was really strong with the ball, perfect. He gave us so much space to breathe and made it so much easier for us.

"Nous [Mazraoui] and me, we have a good rhythm of games now. For myself, I start to feel very good and I'm quite happy with that, so then if you win, the feeling is even better."

De Ligt has started eight Premier League games from a possible 11 fixtures this season.
