Scores and space were certainly at a premium in Sunday’s Ulster Club SFC final with the main threats nullified for both Errigal Ciaran and Kilcoo.

Ruairi Canavan scored 0-9 against Clann Eireann, but was well marshalled by Niall Branagan and failed to score while elder brother Darragh landed just one point from play.

On the Kilcoo side, the Johnston brothers Ryan, Shealan and Jerome all failed to get on the scoresheet while two of Paul Devlin’s three points were from frees.

When the chips were down, it fell to an unlikely match-winner to step up and be the hero. Thankfully for Errigal Ciaran, their raiding wing-back Peter Óg McCartan was more than willing to back himself to score deep in added time to seal a dramatic 1-8 to 0-10 victory at the Box-It Athletic Grounds.

“I’m absolutely delighted, I’m over the moon. To kick the winner. . . it means everything to me,” stated McCartan.

“ It isn’t just about the winner, to get us into that position to get that shot was massive. I ended up taking it on, but it just happened to be me who was in that position and I put it over the bar - it could have been anybody.

“I just knew once I found myself in space that I was going to go for it. I’m lucky it went over.”

“We’d a massive chance before that to score the winner. I thought that was it, the clock was going down very quickly and I thought we might not get another chance.

“We ended up winning the next one and it was Padraig McGirr who passed it out and I went for it.”

He added: “I’m not known for that (scoring). I just found myself in those positions - you just have to back yourself sometimes and go for it. Thankfully, I took the shot and it went over.”

McCartan was vital to Errigal Ciaran’s success as he scored a point inside the final 10 minutes to level the contest before Kilcoo retook the lead via Anthony Morgan.

In the final minute of normal time, McCartan won a free which Tommy Canavan converted before scoring that last-gasp winner to seal a third Ulster title and a first in 22 years for the Dunmoyle men.

“It is an unbelievable feeling to be Ulster champions after 22 years. You dream of that stuff when you are younger - it is unbelievable.” said McCartan.

“Obviously with Errigal, there’s a lot of pressure on teams coming through because of the history that they have. We’ve finally written our own now and we’re up there with the best teams in the club. It just means everything to us.”

“This is a different team and we wanted to create our own history and we have by winning the Ulster Championship and it just means everything to us.”
