Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has sent a message to reported transfer target Viktor Gyokeres.

The Gunners have been credited with an interest in signing the Sporting Lisbon striker for several months, with the rumours first starting back in January.

Gyokeres has been in sublime form for Sporting this season, scoring 23 goals in just 17 appearances across all competitions which has led to rumours that Arsenal could be interested in bringing the striker to North London.

The Sweden international scored seven goals in his last two appearances, including a hat trick against Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday night at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Two of Gyokeres' goals came from the penalty spot in the 4-1 victory over Pep Guardiola's side, in one of Ruben Amorim's final matches in charge before he officially becomes the new head coach at Manchester United.

The first of Gyokeres' three goals against Man City came as he latched onto a through ball that dissected the opposition's defence before chipping his effort over Ederson, which had cancelled out the opening strike from Phil Foden for the visitors.

Ozil, who left Arsenal in January 2021 after almost eight years at the Emirates Stadium with more than 250 appearances to his name, has sent a message to Gyokeres. The former Gunners star reacted to a video posted by Sporting on X, formerly known as Twitter, which showed the highlights of the goals against Man City.

"Congrats [Viktor Gyokeres]," wrote Ozil. "Nice chip shot!" The message was accompanied by a fire emoji and a wink face emoji.

It remains to be seen where Gyokeres' will be playing his football beyond this season. Reports have speculated that Man United could now move to sign the striker following Amorim's appointment.

It has also been reported that Sporting would demand a fee worth up to €70million (£58million) in order to allow Gyokeres to leave the club next summer.
