Micah Richards has highlighted how Liverpool used Aston Villa’s set piece prowess against them to overcome Unai Emery’s men at Anfield.

Liverpool defeated Villa 2-0 on Saturday night courtesy of goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah. Both goals came via counter-attacks from Villa attacking set pieces.

Villa are one of the Premier League’s most productive teams from dead ball situations and the influence of set piece coach Austin MacPhee is regularly hailed. But it proved to their undoing on Merseyside.

In his Match of the Day analysis, ex-Villa defender turned pundit Micah Richards said: “Austin MacPhee has got them so well drilled but Liverpool turned Villa’s strength into their weakness.

“Villa committed men forward, but what that did was leave an ocean of space for the pace of Salah and Nunez and they just didn’t know how to deal with it. They commit so many men forward because they want to hurt Liverpool or the opposition that they’re playing, but they got caught out in the wrong areas.”

The Match of the Day panel also discussed the two penalty shouts Villa had turned down. Check out what they had to say here.
