Michael Carrick explains Boro's goalkeeping situation - and Sol Brynn's role
MICHAEL CARRICK says Sol Brynn deserved his recall to Middlesbrough’s starting side – and was delighted with the way in which the goalkeeper seized his opportunity in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Millwall.
Having deputised for the injured Seny Dieng for a three-match spell, Brynn was dropped back down to the bench when the Senegal international returned to full fitness.
However, Dieng was heavily responsible for Burnley’s goal in Boro’s 1-1 draw at Turf Moor and was at least partially at fault for Leeds’ opener in last Tuesday’s defeat at Elland Road.
Carrick opted to start with Brynn yesterday, and the 24-year-old responded by producing two crucial first-half saves.

He saved from Macauley Langstaff after the Millwall striker broke into the 18-yard box, and produced a similar stop a few minutes later to deny Femi Azeez.
“I thought Sol did well,” said Carrick. “He made those two saves, and they were big, important saves, especially at that time. He then commanded his box well, coming and taking crosses, and he had a really good presence for us.
“He played the three games not so long ago, and played really well. We’re fortunate to be in a position where we can make that decision (to bring him back into the team). We’ve got options to make that decision, and I thought he did really well.”
Brynn is likely to retain his place in the starting spot for Boro’s final game before Christmas, which sees them travel to Home Park to take on Plymouth Argyle next weekend.
