Middlesbrough were beaten 3-0 by Coventry City after Hayden Hackney's red card proved costly at the Riverside.

Goals Bobby Thomas, Haji Wright and Josh Eccles sealed Boro's fate as the visitors took full advantage of the extra man to punish Boro. That was despite Michael Carrick's side making a good fist of things, particularly in the second half. But unable to take any chances, they were punished by two ruthless late goals.

Here's how the Boro players were rated in the heavy Riverside defeat.

Seny Dieng - 6

Beaten three times, though there was nothing he could do with any. He made a good save at 3-0 to stop another too as Coventry ran through again.

Luke Ayling - 6

Showed plenty of battle under tough circumstances but was left wanting with a number of deliveries into the box again.

George Edmundson - 7

In tough circumstances, he battled so well and made a number of big tackles and important blocks as Boro stayed in the game after the red for as long as possible.

Matt Clarke - 6

Not the return to the side he would have hoped for. He didn't do too much wrong but looked a little rusty, particularly late on as Coventry ran through a couple of times.

Neto Borges - 6

Circumstances of the game meant he wasn't able to have as much attacking impact. There was a little more intent in the second half, but he failed to make much use of any decent positions.

Aidan Morris - 6

After a sloppy start, he grew into the game and took an increasingly important role in the second half as he tried to drive Boro forward, although ultimately to no avail.

Hayden Hackney - 4

Saw red for two bookable offences after just 22 minutes. Both bookings came from heavy touches that left him then needing to make a challenge after giving the ball away completely once before that too. He might argue that he won the ball for the second yellow, but he lunged in and caught the player in the follow-through.

Isaiah Jones - 5

Back in the side with Doak needing a rest, Jones' poor form continued in a performance that summed up what appears to be low confidence for him right now. There was one or two bright movements but ultimately he wasted too many decent openings with sloppy touches and passes throughout.

Finn Azaz - 6

Sacrificed early after Hackney's red card. Had started positively and played some good progressive passes to set Boro off on counter attacks.

Riley McGree - 6

Particularly in the second half as he took up a more central role closer to Conway, he looked lively and tried to make things happen for his side. With the man disadvantage not helping, it was one of those days where, despite his intent, little came off.

Tommy Conway - 7

Boro's best on the day. He worked so hard for his side, even when isolated up top after the red card. He set the tone for the second half when winning the ball early with a good press and was really unfortunate to not have any reward for his efforts.

Substitutions

Jonny Howson (For Azaz, 25') - 6 - Helped settle Boro after the red despite a couple of rusty moments. He moved to centre-back late on but didn't look as comfortable there as Coventry punished Boro after the formation change.

Anfernee Dijksteel (For Ayling, 74') - 6 - Brought on as a wing-back but the formation change saw the game very quickly get away from Boro.

Dan Barlaser (For McGree, 74') - 5 - Couldn't have any impact in the game as Coventry quickly went through Boro too easily.

Emmanuel Latte Lath (For Jones, 74') - 5 - No opportunity to really get into the game.

Delano Burgzorg (For Conway, 80') - N/A - Missed a great opportunity to at least score a consolation when put through on goal.
