Midfielder makes Cheltenham Town Women return after spell at Gwalia United
Cheltenham Town Women have bolstered their midfield ranks with the return to the club of Issy Newns, who joins from Gwalia United.
This is Newns’ third spell with the club after a loan spell from Oxford United in 2018/19, and permanently in the 2022/23 season. The year old was delighted to get back playing for a club that she knows all too well.
“It’s nice coming back to a club you’ve been at before, especially when you have some familiar faces," Newns said.

“The club and team itself have changed massively, it’s great to see how much they’ve grown! The girls, and staff are lush. They’ve all made me feel so welcome since coming in."
Under current manager Tom Davies, Newns was a fixture in the club’s maiden season in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division (tier three).
“I know I’m going to have to put a shift in week in, week out," Newns said. "He always wants the best out of his players.
“You know you’re always going to be walking away a better player."
Newns rejoins the club at a pivotal point in the season, as Davies’ side have reached the semi-finals of the WNL Plate and have created club history by reaching the fourth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, where they will face WNL Northern Premier side Wolverhampton Wanderers, on Sunday, January 12.
“It’s been very intense in training; the club is standing in a very good position currently," Newns said.
"The girls are working hard and the result from the weekend showed! Really good grit and determination from the squad.”
Newns joins the club from Gwalia United, (formerly Cardiff City) but was quick to say how much the last 18 months, since leaving Cheltenham at the end of 2022/23 season, have been up and down for her as a player.
“Going back to Gwalia was nice, I have a lot of close friends in the team, so it was nice to settle straight in.
“This time last year however I did have major ankle surgery, which ended my season! That was tough, but when you’ve got your teammates around you it makes you feel better.
“In a way it’s made me a better player, through rehab and building my way back to the pitch was tougher than anything I’ve had to get through."
Lastly, the attacking midfielder was quizzed on her personal aspirations for the rest of the season.
“I’d like to settle into the team, especially with new players around me. Just getting more minutes too.
“Hopefully, I can be a part of helping the club achieve what they want to this season! A few goals wouldn’t hurt either."
